Gafu-ten 2015 part 1

20 Jan

With our 10day trip fast becoming a distant memory, it’s only now I can find the time and the wifi to do some posts. Having enjoyed the trees on the first day without a camera in my hand, I left it to our second day to do some pictures. Having spent far to long in the sales area chatting with various dealers and friends I finally got to the trees only to find we had misjudged the closing time by an hour, so it was all a bit rushed.

Day trip to kinashi

9 Jan

Today we took a 3.5hr train journey to the kinashi bonsai growers area on Shikoku, 3 changes needed and one running down the platform waving to get on a connection the very nice lady driver reopened the doors and welcomed us on.

2015/01/img_2003.jpg

Once we arrived it’s not hard to find bonsai as one grower must be 8ft from the end of the platform so it seemed a good place to start.

2015/01/img_2100.jpg

Not many shohin trees around the area but as you would expect manly black pine. This raft was something different and has good age.

After a quick scout round the nursery and a chat with the owners son, it was time to move on over the next 4hr we went in and out of about 10 nursery varying in quality, but all had something to wow you.

This next one is one of my favourite pines in the area with blemish free lines and multiple viewing angles it’s great.

The ramification on the elm was outstanding and it was huge.

Heathrow bonsai show 2014

26 Oct

This was a great, great show not organised by a club or a huge national committee, but a dedicated pair of enthusiastic hobbyist in the form of Mark & Ming. Self financed and aided by a loyal team of helpers. Great new venue, but same superb catering with breakfast and lunch given to exhibitors which all appreciated so much.
18 club and group displays showed the diverse way in which trees are displayed.

Capel manor show June 2014

30 Jun

Last Sunday in June has been a regular show date for many years now, but unfortunately the show seems to be getting smaller. Venue the Capel manor gardens has got very broken up and it felt like the show was all over the place. Just 2 clubs on show and one of those is not a club but a small but very talented and dedicated group of individuals. All said good day and a good to catch up with old friends and meet some new collectors.

Swindon bonsai show 2014

25 Feb

The swindon show has become over the years a real must view bonsai show on the UK bonsai calendar, and while the lighting this year had been replaced in the main hall for crisp white light giving superb conditions. The trees where of a superb quality, while all sizes where on show I was drawn to the shohin trees.

20140225-203818.jpg
Very nice cork bark elm without as many have the inverse taper.

20140225-203807.jpg
Another but this one has that classic inverse, but has good ramification.

20140225-203722.jpg

20140225-203709.jpg
Hornbeam size wise this is just outside shohin.

20140225-203746.jpg
This one was interesting, while a nice idea I feel for me it was too large for the pagoda as the framework broke lines of the tree.

20140225-203654.jpg
This chojubai is a favourite for me for shohin bonsai.

20140225-203634.jpg

20140225-203622.jpg
Here are a few of the accents that caught my eye.

20140225-203942.jpg

20140225-203931.jpg

20140225-203825.jpg

20140225-203448.jpg

20140225-202532.jpg
Nothing quite says spring like snow drops.

20140225-203921.jpg

20140225-203915.jpg
This is a rare little fellow a bittersweet not something we see very often but what a superb verity it has to go on my wish list. The whole combination of pot and stand compliment it superbly. I feel its time for a tidy and trim to build the framework.

20140225-203900.jpg

20140225-203908.jpg
If it’s a pot and tree combination your looking for then this chojubai has it all.

20140225-203851.jpg

20140225-203413.jpg

20140225-203357.jpg
O look another chojubai that’s a shame.

20140225-203526.jpg

20140225-203536.jpg
Juniper bonsai like this are so useful in shohin compositions.

20140225-202857.jpg

20140225-202846.jpg
The apple green foliage of this white pine has a soft lush feel that shows the health of this little fellow over a rock.

20140225-202603.jpg
This perfect broom style zelcova is a real classic style but a hard one to get to this standard, I think the pot is a koyo one and a super match for the tree. I would love to see this in leaf one day.

20140225-202913.jpg

20140225-202924.jpg
Pyracantha clump, this will look superb with a few berries on.

20140225-202938.jpg

20140225-203002.jpg

20140225-203014.jpg

20140225-203026.jpg
What can you say super tree, super pot, but I have a real problem with this display every time I went near it I couldn’t as it always had a crowd round it. I just hope all those people appreciate the time that goes into this level of shohin bonsai.

20140225-203140.jpg

20140225-203200.jpg

20140225-203221.jpg

20140225-203253.jpg

20140225-203304.jpg
I love the landscape pots, you don’t see many, but they are a great part of the shohin display.

20140225-203344.jpg
Well the show is not all about shohin, that’s in a couple of weeks up at Willowbog. So here are a couple of trees I would have taken home.

20140225-204000.jpg
This scots pine is a real inspiration as it was collected in the new forest about 10years ago good trees can be found in the southern lowlands.

20140225-204033.jpg
I love the movement on this pine as well, just the way I like them.

20140225-204042.jpg

20140225-204056.jpg
A couple of chuhin trees to finish off, the trident over rock has been a regular on the show circuit for a good 10 years always was good but the ramification just gets better.
If you made it down this far, thank you and I hope to see you at the next show.
