Warm and confusion

16 Dec

This spell of warm weather has really got things confused.

The Chinese quince are pushing out

Chouyubai are well away but they flower all winter anyway but look good already.

My biggest problem is berries they seem to be going over quick this year which will spoil the effect come show time next year.

We will have to wait till closer to shows to work out what is going to work. Glad it’s not Noelanders year for shohin. With the national shohin show in April it’s just to early to plan what I will use. Just a case of eat drink and be merry time.

Happy Christmas all.

Taishoen Part 2

I thought I had taken more pictures at the nursery, but realised I must of just been soaking up the enjoyment of our surroundings.
This maple was undergoing some major approach grafts.

This was a nursery that has been top of my list to visit for some time, and it did not disappoint.

Chatting with Bjorn about this prunus he said it was struggling due to its age so 4 years ago it was grafted with new foliage and the old all removed. This means everything other than the main trunk is only 4 years old. The tree now grows like a teenager again.

Where as this maple is on a slow decline to the end of its life, it’s already lost a major branch half way up.

Gafu-ten 2015 part 1

20 Jan

With our 10day trip fast becoming a distant memory, it’s only now I can find the time and the wifi to do some posts. Having enjoyed the trees on the first day without a camera in my hand, I left it to our second day to do some pictures. Having spent far to long in the sales area chatting with various dealers and friends I finally got to the trees only to find we had misjudged the closing time by an hour, so it was all a bit rushed.

Heathrow bonsai show 2014

26 Oct

This was a great, great show not organised by a club or a huge national committee, but a dedicated pair of enthusiastic hobbyist in the form of Mark & Ming. Self financed and aided by a loyal team of helpers. Great new venue, but same superb catering with breakfast and lunch given to exhibitors which all appreciated so much.
18 club and group displays showed the diverse way in which trees are displayed.

Capel manor show June 2014

30 Jun

Last Sunday in June has been a regular show date for many years now, but unfortunately the show seems to be getting smaller. Venue the Capel manor gardens has got very broken up and it felt like the show was all over the place. Just 2 clubs on show and one of those is not a club but a small but very talented and dedicated group of individuals. All said good day and a good to catch up with old friends and meet some new collectors.

Shohin Acer repot.

8 Mar

This little maple has been happy in this pot for the last 3years the pot I picked up from a nursery in Kinashi it was cheap as it has a chip on the inner rim, so I strategically place moss and know one would know. The tree came from mansai-en 5 years ago. Two problems with the pot, it is to big now to build ramification it has done its job to re grow the apex, it also has a crack in it so has a horrid dud sound when tapped. I don’t want to loose it as I have another tree in mind for it. Here is the tree just before starting.

20140308-075755.jpg

It had a light autumn prune and been in the Polly greenhouse all winter.
First job is to sort the pot out that it is going into. I had a Walsall pot about right so it was cleaned and mesh fitted, tie wires were put in and I checked to see if it had a better front on this occasion it was marginal.

20140308-080447.jpg
The old pot has an internal lip so it was stuck fast, I used a knife to cut along one length, and half each side to make removing it easier.

20140308-080729.jpg
It sounds drastic but all the outer root will be trimmed anyway. Once out the pot we can see the healthy roots have filled the pot.

20140308-080956.jpg

20140308-081036.jpg
Next we need to remove the old mesh and anchor wires before getting in with scissors, using a root hook and chopstick we tease out all the outer root and loosen up the base.

After 3years the weeds also need a careful removal to have a fresh start. We need to improve the nebari it is our one in a few year chance so need to think about what we are doing and looking to archive.Top growth we work the whole time down here in the root zone largely is down to the tree, pointing it all in the right direction is the best we can do. All over large root is cut back, and anything on top of other roots removed this will pull out the base improving the nebari.

20140308-083949.jpg

20140308-083957.jpg

20140308-084004.jpg
In the last repot I used a wire loop to pin a root into the right direction.

20140308-084557.jpg
So after some brushing with a green nylon brush in water we have moved a few roots and got as much as we can flowing in the right direction for future improment.

20140308-084929.jpg

20140308-084937.jpg

20140308-084949.jpg
We have spoken about the outer edge but another very important area is the underside, if you want a good spreading nebari you need to eliminate everything under the trunk as none of this will help you spread the plate. I spent ages cutting up into the trunk last time to achieve this, it has healed better than I could have hoped.

20140308-085438.jpg

20140308-085444.jpg

So its time to get it back into the pot, we need to make sure we get rid of all air pockets and with that hole in the bottom we need to make sure it’s filled. I use shohin grade akadama as I believe it promotes finer roots and this in turn gives finer ramification. I don’t use a larger particle drainage layer on deciduous but do on pines.

20140308-092710.jpg
So the mound in the pot will go into the void and fill the underneath. Insert the tree make sure your placement is correct keeping it off centre we then rotate quarter turns left and right to settle it up into the base and fill those hard to reach areas once this is done we fix the tree in the pot with the wires. Where possible you should avoid getting to close to the trunk keep to the outer edge. Fix down both sides so it can’t move, if a tree can move in its pot it will damage the new tender roots.

20140308-093228.jpg
Twist the wire and as you twist pull towards you and at the end of the twist go in as it tightens, you won’t be able to pull back at this point it’s job done, trim the end and push down. Start getting some soil around the edge giving a few bangs on the edge of the pot helps settle some in, and then work in with a chopstick try to avoid to much stabbing as this will break up the akadama try to use small rotating motion to push up the akadama then add more and repeat until your happy its in all the nooks and crannies.

20140308-093817.jpg
As soon as it is done you need to give a good watering, best done with a fine rose, flush as much of the dust through until the water runs clear.
For me at this stage it’s job done as I may use it next week at the club show, but normally I chop up sphagnum fine and put a layer over the surface to conserve moisture and protect the upper root level.

20140308-105628.jpg
Remember all that work leaves the tree in a weakened state so it will need some protection while it gathers its energy.
Thank you for reading the way I go about my maple repotting, I will do another update on the tree with spring pruning when the time is right.

Swindon bonsai show 2014

25 Feb

The swindon show has become over the years a real must view bonsai show on the UK bonsai calendar, and while the lighting this year had been replaced in the main hall for crisp white light giving superb conditions. The trees where of a superb quality, while all sizes where on show I was drawn to the shohin trees.

20140225-203818.jpg
Very nice cork bark elm without as many have the inverse taper.

20140225-203807.jpg
Another but this one has that classic inverse, but has good ramification.

20140225-203722.jpg

20140225-203709.jpg
Hornbeam size wise this is just outside shohin.

20140225-203746.jpg
This one was interesting, while a nice idea I feel for me it was too large for the pagoda as the framework broke lines of the tree.

20140225-203654.jpg
This chojubai is a favourite for me for shohin bonsai.

20140225-203634.jpg

20140225-203622.jpg
Here are a few of the accents that caught my eye.

20140225-203942.jpg

20140225-203931.jpg

20140225-203825.jpg

20140225-203448.jpg

20140225-202532.jpg
Nothing quite says spring like snow drops.

20140225-203921.jpg

20140225-203915.jpg
This is a rare little fellow a bittersweet not something we see very often but what a superb verity it has to go on my wish list. The whole combination of pot and stand compliment it superbly. I feel its time for a tidy and trim to build the framework.

20140225-203900.jpg

20140225-203908.jpg
If it’s a pot and tree combination your looking for then this chojubai has it all.

20140225-203851.jpg

20140225-203413.jpg

20140225-203357.jpg
O look another chojubai that’s a shame.

20140225-203526.jpg

20140225-203536.jpg
Juniper bonsai like this are so useful in shohin compositions.

20140225-202857.jpg

20140225-202846.jpg
The apple green foliage of this white pine has a soft lush feel that shows the health of this little fellow over a rock.

20140225-202603.jpg
This perfect broom style zelcova is a real classic style but a hard one to get to this standard, I think the pot is a koyo one and a super match for the tree. I would love to see this in leaf one day.

20140225-202913.jpg

20140225-202924.jpg
Pyracantha clump, this will look superb with a few berries on.

20140225-202938.jpg

20140225-203002.jpg

20140225-203014.jpg

20140225-203026.jpg
What can you say super tree, super pot, but I have a real problem with this display every time I went near it I couldn’t as it always had a crowd round it. I just hope all those people appreciate the time that goes into this level of shohin bonsai.

20140225-203140.jpg

20140225-203200.jpg

20140225-203221.jpg

20140225-203253.jpg

20140225-203304.jpg
I love the landscape pots, you don’t see many, but they are a great part of the shohin display.

20140225-203344.jpg
Well the show is not all about shohin, that’s in a couple of weeks up at Willowbog. So here are a couple of trees I would have taken home.

20140225-204000.jpg
This scots pine is a real inspiration as it was collected in the new forest about 10years ago good trees can be found in the southern lowlands.

20140225-204033.jpg
I love the movement on this pine as well, just the way I like them.

20140225-204042.jpg

20140225-204056.jpg
A couple of chuhin trees to finish off, the trident over rock has been a regular on the show circuit for a good 10 years always was good but the ramification just gets better.
If you made it down this far, thank you and I hope to see you at the next show.
