Well done to all the entry’s for braving the scrutiny of the Japanese public, whenever I saw the wall it always had viewers. Thank you to the organisers for giving the whole world the chance to participate in the finest shohin show in the world.

Kouka-en part 1

12 Jan

After a snowy start in Kyoto we made our way over to Osaka and by the time we arrived the sun was out and it was quite warm. We were welcomed by Bjorn and his team and enjoyed a super day on the nursery and even picked up a few tips, one I will share in a future post. For now enjoy the video and part two or even 3 will be photos.

After the shows, it’s not all over.

11 Jan

Monday morning and with the two shows now over, we awake to snow falling. Another day and another nursery to visit. Shinkansen to Osaka to visit Fujikawa San at Kouka-en. This nursery has always been at the top of my wish list to visit, very much looking forward to meeting the talented team for the day.

Black pine over rock.

Thought I remembered this tree, first picture was during the ASPAC convention a couple of years ago and bottom one today. It’s a shame it lost the branch, I guess the deeper pot change was due to it weakening in the shallow one although it looked good in it.

Day trip to kinashi

9 Jan

Today we took a 3.5hr train journey to the kinashi bonsai growers area on Shikoku, 3 changes needed and one running down the platform waving to get on a connection the very nice lady driver reopened the doors and welcomed us on.

Once we arrived it’s not hard to find bonsai as one grower must be 8ft from the end of the platform so it seemed a good place to start.

Not many shohin trees around the area but as you would expect manly black pine. This raft was something different and has good age.

After a quick scout round the nursery and a chat with the owners son, it was time to move on over the next 4hr we went in and out of about 10 nursery varying in quality, but all had something to wow you.

This next one is one of my favourite pines in the area with blemish free lines and multiple viewing angles it’s great.

The ramification on the elm was outstanding and it was huge.

Another day tomorrow and another show, stay tuned.

Gafu-ten the preliminary part 0.5

8 Jan

Today saw the first day of the Gafu-ten, just the most amazing trees in a friendly atmosphere. Got to meet a few people I have only spoken with on email and seen trees only seen in books. As the show is still on till Sunday I won’t post trees till it’s finished. So just a few picks to wet your appetite.

Ready for the off.

5 Jan

Well 12hr now till I leave for Japan to visit the 40th Gafu-ten and other venues which you will have to wait to see. I thought I would check round the garden this morning and found the birds had taken a liking to one of my maples.

Yesterday I also had an email from the Noelanders committee accepting my shohin entry. Let’s hope I can find the couple of pots I need.
